Telethon Slated to Help Assist Households in Aroostook

The 3rd Annual Telethon to assist Aroostook County citizens experiencing heating and housing hardships will take place November 14th. Dubbed “Helping Hands for Warm and Safe Homes,” the telethon is once again being coordinated by three local organizations committed to making a difference. WAGM TV, Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP), and United Way of Aroostook will partner to bring the day-long telethon being broadcast on WAGM TV from 5:30AM to 7PM.

The goal has been set to raise $60,000. The local dollars raised will be used to assist individuals and families in crisis. All funds will be administered by ACAP. Based on reoccurring needs in the community, the program has expanded to include, not only heating assistance, but also safe housing assistance.

The day long telethon will utilize over 30 volunteers from various organizations and businesses to take calls at both the WAGM TV donation call center and the ACAP HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) call center. Viewers are encouraged to call to donate to help raise funds.

Individuals needing assistance will need to apply and be approved for funds. They should call the ACAP offices at 768-3053 to make an appointment. All households receiving assistance will also receive follow-up services from ACAP’s coaching staff, which opens the door to individuals and families to get help with financial literacy, budgeting, weatherization, energy conservation education, and even provides energy related financial incentives.
