The Deer Isle-Stonington (DIS) Head Start Pre-K classroom—operated by Community Action in Aroostook, Washington and Hancock Counties (CAAWHC)— recently welcomed two special guests for a meaningful visit highlighting the importance of early childhood education and community partnerships.
Joining the classroom were Linda L. Nelson, Economic & Community Development Director for the Town of Stonington, and Jason Parent, Chief Executive Officer of Community Action in Aroostook, Washington and Hancock Counties. Students warmly greeted their visitors and proudly showcased their daily learning experiences.
During small group time, students introduced themselves, shared their interests, and listened attentively as the guests spoke—demonstrating confidence and strong early communication skills. The classroom visit continued into Work Time, where Ms. Nelson and Mr. Parent actively engaged with students as they explored learning centers, creative play, and hands-on art activities. Children eagerly shared their projects, highlighting their social-emotional growth and enthusiasm for learning.
The group later gathered for Large Group, where students participated in a calendar check-in and a joyful sing-along of “Wheels on the Bus.” To conclude the visit, students proudly presented handmade thank-you cards before transitioning to a family-style lunch. The morning ended with heartfelt thanks, smiles, and hugs from the children.
